BAGHJAN BLOWOUT: TDCC Demand for adequate compensation to affected people

TINSUKIA: As the OIL authority has failed to plug the Baghjan blowout even after 13 days, the Tinsukia District Congress Committee (TDCC), while expressing serious concern over extensive damage to both humans and wildlife due to emission of several million metric tonnes of gas and other chemical substances, demanded that the district administration as well as the State Government should provide adequate compensation to the affected people.

Jayanta Kalita, president of TDCC, stated that the State Government, after passing the buck to the OIL authority, ignored its own responsibility towards the citizens. Instead of showing sympathy to OIL, the government machinery must act in a responsive way towards the people, Kalita urged.

The TDCC laid down certain demands before the Tinsukia district administration which TDCC desired to be addressed. While questioning the establishment of relief camps as per COVID-19 protocol, Kalita urged the government to take proper healthcare measures for the inmates of the relief camps. He demanded adequate compensation for the affected families without adhering to bureaucratic red tapism and added that the administration should open medical camps in the vicinity of the blowout site and to carry out elaborate health check-up for the people. He also demanded a judicial inquiry to find out the cause of the blowout by thoroughly scrutinizing the working plan of M/s John Energy prior to days of the blowout. The inquiry must also bring within its ambit whether OIL's OGPS (Oil & Gas Products & Services) commission section and drilling department carried out cementing, logging and pressure monitoring job in a proper manner.
