BISWANATH CHARIALI: The 38th Foundation Day of Biswanath College of Agriculture, the only place of agricultural education in the north of the Brahmaputra, was celebrated on Sunday. The programme began with the hoisting of the college flag. Associate Science Guru, Dr Ranendra Nath Burman hoisted the flag and urged the students, teachers and employees to render selfless service to the society. Retired Professor Dr Krishna Kumar Das and Professor Dr Manoj Kumar Sharma of the College, also spoke about their experiences at different times after the commencement of the college.
Taking part as the Chief Guest in the open session, Atul Borah, Minister of Agriculture, Government of Assam mentioned about the progress of Assam Agricultural University for the development of agriculture in Assam. Referring to the development of the agricultural sector in Assam, all the students were urged to go ahead in this direction.
Former MLA of Biswanath, Prabin Hazarika and present MLA Pramod Borthakur called upon the Agriculture Minister to take necessary steps to upgrade Biswanath College of Agriculture to a full-fledged agricultural university. Dr Bidyut Chandan Deka, Vice-Chancellor of Assam Agricultural University mentioned about the steps taken by Assam Agricultural University for the development of agriculture and expressed the hope that all the farmers will be benefited from the from the Integrated Plant for Production of Agri Bio-Input. M Meitei, Adviser of the North East Council, also attended the meeting and hoped that the project set up with the help of NEC would benefit the farmers and tea gardens by reducing the use of chemical fertilizers and deadly pesticides. The meeting was attended by District Commissioner Munindra Nath Ngatey, Superintendent of Police Subhashish Baruah and P Kamalabai, Director of North Eastern Region Farm Machinery Training and Testing Institute.
The ‘Integrated Plant for Production of Agri Bio Input’ was inaugurated at of the meeting built with the financial assistance of NEC at a cost of Rs 15 crore, Promak Technology and Services has already produced eight products for commercial production. It is expected that this agricultural plant will be considered as a special beneficial for the production of all types of vegetables and agricultural products in the national agricultural sector, especially in the field of paddy farming, tea initiatives, and agricultural products. The target is to produce 1.3 million litres of fertilizer and combustion metric tons of organic pesticides annually and the production will be increased to meet the demand in the market. The regular production of this plant is expected to start after the first week of March.
Later, the Minister visited the North Eastern Region Farm Machinery Training and Testing Institute under the Government of India and inspected the first Agricultural Drone Pilot Training Centre in India. A discussion was held with P Kamalabai, Director of the Institute, on the issues related to the farmers of the state.
