MANGALDAI: The BJP-AGP coalition successfully formed the Darrang Zilla Parishad on Tuesday, as anticipated. Sewali Goswami Kalita, an elected BJP member from Howly Zilla Parishad Constituency (ZPC) under Mangaldai LAC, was elected president, a position reserved for women. Kalita secured seven votes, defeating her Congress opponent, Mukta Devi Mandal, who received four votes, with one vote declared invalid. Parishmita Nath, a BJP member from Hazarikapara-Kuruwa ZPC under Sipajhar LAC, was elected vice-president.
In the 12-member elected Panchayat body, BJP holds the majority with six members, followed by Congress with four, and AGP and Raijor Dol with one each.
Following the election, District Commissioner Parag Kumar Kakaty administered the oath-taking ceremony for all elected members, attended by Mangaldai Legislator Basanta Das, former Legislator Gurujyoti Das, Chief Executive Officer of Darrang Zilla Parishad Manash Das, and others.
