NAGAON: The first meeting of the newly-elected members of the 27-member Nagaon Zilla Parishad was held at the conference hall of Nagaon District Commissioner’s office under the chairmanship of District Commissioner Debashish Sarma on Tuesday.
At the beginning of the meeting, the newly-elected members took their oath of office. The BJP-AGP alliance formed the Nagaon Zilla Parishad for the next five years. Accordingly, Gitanjali Hazarika from the Uriagaon Zilla Parishad constituency, a BJP member, was elected as the President of the Zilla Parishad while Jayashree Mandal from the Ambagan Zilla Parishad constituency, an AGP member, was elected as the Vice-President.
The post of the president of the Nagaon Zilla Parishad was reserved for a woman, and the post of Vice-President was reserved for a Scheduled Caste (Open) candidate. The BJP-AGP alliance secured a clear majority by winning 14 out of the 27 seats in the parishad. The Congress Party won 13 seats and will occupy the opposition benches.
At the request of the attending dignitaries and newly-elected members, District Commissioner Debashish Sarma performed the iconic song ‘Manuhe Manuhar Babe’ by Dr Bhupen Hazarika and called upon the newly-elected members to move forward in their respective fields with the inherent message of the song.
The meeting was attended by Keshab Mahanta, Minister of Revenue and Disaster Management, Government of Assam, MLAs Rupak Sarmah, Jitu Goswami, Sashi Kanta Das, Nurul Huda, and Sibamoni Bora, Manoj Kumar Sikaria, Chief Executive Officer of the Nagaon Zilla Parishad, Pankaj Nagbanshi, Additional District Commissioner, Shekharan Phukan, Election Officer, Pulok Biswas, Circle Officer of Rupahi Revenue Circle, Roben Kumar Barman, Block Development Officer of Bagoriguri Development Block, Sweta Padma Sarma, Block Development Officer of Kathiatoli Development Block, and other officials and staff from the District Election Officer’s office and Nagaon Zilla Parishad.
Addressing the media, Minister Keshab Mahanta congratulated the elected President, Vice-President, and all members of the Nagaon Zilla Parishad. He emphasized that the newly-formed Zilla Parishad should prioritize the overall development and progress of Nagaon district over the next five years. He urged the elected representatives to work swiftly to make the Panchayat system more dynamic and ensure transparency and cleanliness in their work.
