TANGLA: Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma kicked off his five-day tour of the five districts of Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) from Udalguri on Thursday. He also attended a review meeting earlier at the District Commissioners Office, Udalguri to review and fast-track development work and welfare schemes. Addressing a party workers’ meeting in Udalguri, he asserted that BJP would field candidates in all the ten BTC council seats in the upcoming council elections. He further stated that BJP was committed to ushering in permanent peace, progress, and prosperity in the Bodo belt.
Among the key announcements was the expansion of Orunodoi 3.0. “Earlier, Udalguri had 58,000 beneficiaries under Orunodoi. We’re now increasing that to 1.20 lakh families. This scheme is meant to directly support the poorest and most vulnerable,” he said. He also announced that the Mukhyamantri Mahila Udyamita scheme would be launched in August.
“Self-help groups will receive Rs 10,000 each to promote women’s entrepreneurship. In Udalguri, about 1.07 lakh women will benefit,” the CM said. Under the Mukhya Mantri Atmanirbhar Assam scheme, approximately 2,500 youths from Udalguri have already been identified to receive financial and skill development support. He also revealed that the government was working with neighbouring Bhutan to resolve the region’s water issues.
“Bhutan has agreed to allow us to bring water from their reservoirs to Udalguri, Baksa, and Tamulpur. Two such projects have already been completed, and three more are in the pipeline. This will greatly benefit agriculture and drinking water supply in these areas,” he said. He also assured of establishing a campus of Bodoland University in Udalguri. He also stated that the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) polls are expected to take place in September, with results likely to be declared before Durga Puja. CM Sarma was scheduled to visit Tamulpur on Friday, followed by Baksa and Kokrajhar on July 8, and Chirang on July 9.
“These visits will help us identify gaps and accelerate implementation,” he said. The event was also attended by Assam BJP President Dilip Saikia, Assam BJP Cabinet Minister Pijush Hazarika, Assam Legislative Assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimary, Udalguri MLA Gobinda Basumatary, Mazbat MLA Charan Boro, Kamalpur MLA Diganta Kalita, Assam BJP General Secretary (Org) GR Ravindra Raju, and BTC Executive Members among others.
