KHERONI: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) district committees of West Karbi Anglong and Karbi Anglong have issued a strong condemnation of the physical attack on Dr Numal Momin, Deputy Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly (ALA) and MLA from Bokajan, by Congress MLA Nurul Huda (MLA from Rupohihat). The incident, which occurred yesterday within the premises of the Assam Legislative Assembly, has sparked widespread outrage and drawn sharp criticism from BJP leaders.
A delegation, led by Roland Killing, President of BJP Karbi Anglong, and Radip Ronghang, President of BJP West Karbi Anglong, along with other prominent party leaders and workers, sat in protest at the district headquarters and submitted a memorandum to the Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly via the district commissioners of both districts. The memorandum demanded an immediate investigation into the incident and called for unprecedented punishment for the Congress MLA, whose actions have been described as thuggish and a direct affront to democratic principles. The BJP leaders expressed dismay over the assault, stating that it has tarnished the dignity of the Assam Assembly and violated the Code of Conduct for Parliament, thereby shaming the entire legislative system. Roland Killing emphasized Dr Numal Momin’s stature as a respected tribal leader and a representative of the Garo community, a small ethnic group in Assam. “Dr Momin is a strong voice for the Garos and an influential figure who has been elected twice to the Assam Assembly with the support of various ethnic groups. This attack is not just an assault on an individual but an insult to the indigenous communities he represents,” Killing said.
The incident has been labelled a dark chapter in the history of the Assam Assembly, with the BJP asserting that it exposes the ‘true face’ of Congress MLAs. The delegation underscored the need for swift justice, urging authorities to hold Nurul Huda accountable for his actions. “Such behaviour is unacceptable in a democratic institution. We demand a thorough investigation and exemplary punishment to ensure that this never happens again,” Radip Ronghang added.
