SILCHAR: Sushmita Dev, the TMC Rajya Sabha MP from West Bengal, said that sensing massive erosion in its main support base, the BJP in Assam had resorted to unlawful eviction drives to create communal disturbances. Addressing a rally here in Silchar, organized by her party in protest against alleged harassment of Bengali-speaking people in various BJP-ruled states, Dev said that the government had miserably failed to keep its electoral promises in all the sectors, and that hence the ruling party had resorted to communal politics which they were expert in.

“The BJP betrayed the Bengalis, the community which had unconditionally supported the party in the last few elections in Assam,” she alleged. Sushmita Dev said that it was an extremely grave signal that the BJP government was rejecting all the valid documents like Aadhaar and Voter ID cards for proving one’s citizenship.

Dev, who once represented Silchar both in the Assembly as well as in the Lok Sabha as a member of the Congress, pointed fingers at the Himanta Biswa Sarma government alleging that the ruling party was playing dangerous communal politics only to reap dividends in the ensuing election. “The Chief Minister could sense that people of Assam are extremely aggrieved and frustrated with his government and for him, communal division is the last resort,” maintaining this, Dev said that the voters of Assam were more matured and intelligent and they would throw out the corrupt and the communal government from power.
