MANGALDAI: What is the vision of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for a corruption and criminal-free government? A person accused in several heinous crimes, including a murder case, a robbery case and a theft case registered in three police stations, has been projected by the BJP for 65 Kalaigaon LAC in Darrang as its candidate.

Perhaps the BJP failed to find a person with a clean image as its candidate in the ensuing assembly election in the State. This declaration can well be seen in none other than the affidavit filed by the candidate himself in question along with his nomination papers which is available in the official website of the Election Commission of India. This candidate with criminal background is Madhu Ram Deka –a resident of House Number 20, Namghar Path, Bashishthapur bye lane, Wireless under Hatigaon Police Station in Kamrup (metro).

According to the affidavit sworn in by the candidate Madhu Ram Deka before the Notary and submitted along with his nomination papers on March 12, he is accused in Bhangagarh PS of Kamrup (metro) case no. 145/2020 under section 447/385/323/392/ 34 of Indian Penal Code with the allegation of his involvement in criminal trespass, extortion, robbery and wrongful restraint. In the case number 499/2010 registered at Bashishtha PS of Kamrup (metro), he is accused with allegation of criminal trespass, theft and cheating with criminal intimidation. He is also accused in the allegation of grievous hurt and thereby causing death in the case number 114/2007 registered at Hajo Police Station in Kamrup (rural) district. Significantly, the Gauhati High Court granted him pre-arrest bail on February 23, 2011 in connection with the case registered at Bashishtha PS. However, in the newspaper advertisement issued by Madhu Ram Deka, there is no mention of the case registered against him at Bashishtha Police Station

Significantly, minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma and Mangaldai Parliamentarian Dilip Saikia, on the day of filing of nomination papers on March 12, attended an election rally at Mangaldai to greet and congratulate Madhu Ram Deka as the BJP candidate for 65 Kalaigaon LAC.
