Kokrajhar: The Bodoland Janajati Suraksha Mancha (BJSM) emphasized the development and expansion of Bodo language and literature and called upon all to love and respect one’s language and literature. The Mancha also urged all the guardians and youths to dedicate themselves for the development of Bodo language.

The president of the BJSM, Janaklal Basumatary said that November 16 was a red-letter day for Bodo people because the Bodo Sahitya Sabha (BSS) was formed in 1952 at Basugaon in the then undivided Kokrajhar district. The Boro language and literature were in unwritten form till BSS was formed in November 16, 1952. Since then Boro language and literature have been progressing step by step, he said.

Basumatary said that due to the relentless effort of Boro Thunlai Afat (BSS), under the leadership of Satish Chandra Basumatary, Jagen Basumatary, Bihuram Boro and Bineswar Brahma, the Boro language flourished into a modern form of Boro language and literature. In 1963, the Boro language was introduced in primary schools and in 1968 it was introduced in secondary level as medium of instruction following a great movement by the Bodo people.

“It has attained status of major Indian language being enlisted in the 8th schedule of the Indian Constitution w.e.f. 2003 and has been introduced as an optional subject in Civil Services examination conducted by UPSC. So today, Boro is a full-grown language in India. November 16 is the birthday of written Boro language and literature,” he said and added that despite many odds, the Boro language continued to flourish and progress in its own merit because Boro people loved their language and literature dearly.
