KOKRAJHAR: The 60th Boro Beijwng Saan or Bodo-medium day was celebrated in different parts of Assam with various day-long colourful programmes. The Bodo Sahitya Sabha (BSS). Kokrajhar district committee and All Bodo Students’ Union (ABSU) jointly observed the Bodo Medium Day at Nayekgaon High School in Kokrajhar district on Friday in a befitting manner.

As per the programme, Bijel Kumar Basumatary, president of Kokrajhar district Bodo Sahitya Sabha hoisted the sabha flag followed by homage to martyrs. A colourful rally was also carried out on the occasion.

President of Bodo Sahitya Sabha Dr. Surath Narzary attended the open session as the chief guest, Principal of Kokrajhar Girls’ College Dr. Adaram Basumatary, ABSU vice president Kwrwmdao Wary attended as guests.

It be mentioned that it was on this day in May 18, 1963, Bodo language was declared as the medium of instruction in lower primary schools in the Bodo-dominated areas of Kokrajhar subdivision in the then undivided Goalpara district of lower Assam by the then Assam Chief Minister Bimala Prasad Chaliha. Now the Bodo is medium of instruction up to Higher Secondary and it is also MIL subject in university level. The Bodo language was included in the 8th schedule in the constitution of India in 2003 and subsequently declared as the associate official language of Assam. Boro language is the largest speaking language of tribals in the north east region. The BSS and ABSU have approached the government of West Bengal to introduce Bodo as medium of instruction especially in north Bengal.
