KOKRAJHAR: Bodoland University (BU) and the North Eastern Sustainable Solutions (NESS) on Friday signed a 3-year MoU for bamboo-based farming, nurseries, and industry to give a new direction to bamboo-based livelihoods and entrepreneurship in the Bodoland region.

The important MoU was signed between the Centre for Bamboo Studies at BU and the NESS. Effective for three years, this agreement will strengthen the entire supply chain from scientific bamboo cultivation to bringing value-added bamboo products to the market.

During the MoU signing ceremony held at Bodoland University, Registrar Dr Prahlad Basumatary noted that the BTR region had long been known for its abundant bamboo resources, but lacked scientific utilisation and commercialisation. While the university’s Centre for Bamboo Studies is already engaged in research and training, NESS is an active organisation focused on natural resource-based enterprise development across Northeast India.

Looking beyond just initial operations, the partnership has outlined a long-term roadmap that includes gradually expanding the nursery network and integrating with environmental financing mechanisms, such as carbon credits and green credits, to turn bamboo plantations into climate-resilient income sources.
