BOKAKHAT: With the initiative of Kaziranga National Park (KNP) and Tiger Reserve, and in collaboration with JDASG College, Bokakhat, and the Wildlife Rehabilitation and Conservation Centre, World Elephant Day was celebrated on Tuesday at the Wildlife Rehabilitation and Conservation Centre located at Borjuri, Kaziranga, along with the rest of the world.

In keeping with the spirit of World Elephant Day, 50 students of JDASG College planted organically-grown Napier grass and various trees within the campus of the Rehabilitation and Conservation Centre to provide food for herbivorous wild animals currently under treatment there. It has been learned that, in the future, this organically-grown grass will be used by the centre as feed for herbivorous animals undergoing treatment. At Tuesday’s World Elephant Day programme, presided over by Geetanjali Kalita, Superintendent of the Kaziranga Field Director’s Office, dignitaries present included Kaziranga Field Director Dr Sonali Ghosh, Professor Dr Bijoy Sharma of JDASG College, Dr Bhaskar Choudhury, Senior Veterinary Officer and Director of the Wildlife Rehabilitation and Conservation Centre, environmentalist Uttam Saikia, assistant conservators of forests Jayanta Das and Bubul Boruah, and Divisional Veterinary Officer Dr Saurabh Borgohain, along with students and staff of JDASG College.

In her address, Field Director Dr Sonali Ghosh stated that the grass planted by the students would not be for all wildlife, but specifically for use as feed for animals under treatment. She also remarked that on the occasion of World Elephant Day, apart from outlining action plans for elephant conservation for the students, trees that serve as food for elephants were also planted to create awareness and impart knowledge among the students regarding elephant diets. Environmentalist Uttam Saikia urged the students not to engage in any activities that would make wildlife dependent on humans. Dr Bhaskar Choudhury described elephant care and behaviour at the Wildlife Rehabilitation and Conservation Centre. Dr Bijoy Sharma expressed his gratitude to Dr Sonali Ghosh and the Kaziranga authorities for providing opportunities for students to contribute to wildlife conservation efforts.
