Bongaigaon AGP worker shot to death by miscreants ahead of Panchayat Polls

Guwahati/Bongaigaon: Sensation prevailed in Bongaigaon’s Gonabiniyat area after an Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) worker was allegedly shot to death by some unidentified miscreants on Monday evening.

As per a report, the Asom Gana Parishad worker identified as Habez Uddin (50) along with few other AGP members were holding a ‘Kabigaan Programme’ when some unidentified miscreants shot Habez in the head from a point blank range.

Later, the miscreants managed to escape from the spot.

Following the incident, Kokila Police reached the spot and recovered the body. They also launched an operation to nab the culprits.

On the other hand, family members of the deceased Habez are suspecting that he was shot to death by his rivals with whom he was allegedly involved in a dispute earlier. Further investigations are on.

It may be mentioned that the first phase of the two-phased Panchayat polls in Assam will be held from tomorrow, covering 16 administrative districts of the state.

As per police report, tight security arrangements have been made for smooth conduct of the polling and polling parties have already been dispatched to their respective booths.

Polling will begin at 7 am and continue till 3 pm tomorrow.

Furthermore, in the first phase polls, 796 candidates are contesting for 251 zila parishad member seats, 3,799 candidates are fighting for 1,304 anchalik panchayat member seats, 4,155 candidates are vying for 1,304 gaon panchayat president posts and 34,765 candidates are in fray for 13,040 gaon panchayat member seats.

Altogether 442 candidates have been declared winners uncontested in the first phase.
