BARPETA: Though the Brahmaputra and Beki rivers are flowing above danger level, yet the water has started receding. The Kuricchu Hydropower Plant of Bhutan has been releasing excess water which has wreaked havoc in Barpeta.

As per information, Bhutan released 8260 cumecs at 8 am on Friday. This flooded most of the villages of Barpeta district. The five rivers of the district - Brahmaputra, Beki, Nakhanda, Marachowlkhowa and Bhelengi - are flowing above danger level. But the water of Manah, Pahumara and Kaldiya rivers is receding. Till now, all total 4,29,708 people in 301 villages have been affected badly by flood and 12,477 hectares cropland have been destroyed. Barpeta district administration has set up 35 relief centres and 54 relief camps till now. NDRF personnel are engaged in rescue operations. The body of Biju Das (45), son of Arjun Das of Patbausi, Barpeta was recovered. It was sent to FAAMCH for post-mortem.
