SILCHAR: BSF was raised on December 1965 just after Indo-Pak war when the need was felt for a specialized and specific force to guard the frontiers of the nation. Starting with 25 Battalions under the guidance of Padma Vibhushan K F Rustsmji today it has become a formidable force with 193 battalions. It stands as a rock to meet the challenges of the enemies in the western front where the nefarious design by Pakistan has become the order of the day.

BSF has grown as a unique force with its own air, water, artillery and animal wings. Its role has become multidimensional in guarding the border, internal security duties, counter insurgency operations, anti Naxal drive, conduct of election duties or extending helping hands to victims of natural calamity. It is a force to be proud of. Cachar-Mizoram Frontier Force stationed at Masimpur, near this town guards borders of Barak Valley and Mizoram with Bangladesh. Besides, BSF is also deployed in Manipur and Nagaland for anti insurgency operations.

Under the Command of Mridul Sonowal IG BSF Mizoram and Cachar Frontier, borders are being kept under strict vigilance and all out efforts have been put to curb cross-border crimes including cattle smuggling and create sense of security among the border population. During 2021, the Frontier force has carried out many operations and succeeded in seizures of various contraband goods which include 6 arms and ammunitions, 295 cattle, 6, 13,426 yaba tablets, 2709 kgs of heroine, 221 grams of brown sugar, 150 kgs of opium, 481 kgs of ganja, 1431 bottles of cough syrups and apprehending 78 Indians, 10 Bangladeshis and one Myanmar national.

BSF is also carrying out a number of civic action programmes like drug abuse awareness and medical camps, pre recruitment training to youths of border villages, adoption of village, evacuation of patients and marooned people during natural calamities as well as other welfare activities. During COVID-19, the force extended all possible help to needy and poor to overcome the distress. On this occasion, a grand feast was organised in which BSF IG took part along with other officers, ranks and their families.
