Guwahati:

As many as ten prominent organizations from the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) have now come together urging Assam's Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to keep only Kokrajhar locals in the quarantine camps that have been set up across the district.

Penning a joint letter to the Health Minister, the bodies expressed their concerns: "We are aware the partial lockdown is still in place at our district amidst the Covid-19 pandemic. In this regard there are quarantine centres that are set up at some places of the district, the social organizations of Kokrajhar district would like to raise some concerns. Sir, in the quarantine centres there are incoming natives of the district from other work places or districts or from the rest of India."

The BTC bodies also said that there are issues raised by some people from the locals as well as from other nearby districts that there are some people from the other districts who are quarantined in the district's quarantine centres.

The bodies have made a "humble request" to Sarma to retain only the people from Kokrajhar and shift others to their own districts where they belong so that it will be convenient for them to shift when they are released.

The note was undersigned by leaders of the Kokrajhar District Committees of the Bodo Sahitya Sabha, All Bodo Students Union, All Bodo Women Welfare Federation, Dularai Harimu Afad, All BTC Minority Students Union, Garo Students Union, All Assam Bengali Youth Federation, Scheduled Caste Students' Union, All Rabha Students Union, and All BTC Nath Jugi Students' Union.

It is pertinent to mention here that Srirampur Check-gate at Kokrajhar serves as a key entry point via which many have crossed over to Assam after easing of lockdown restrictions.

On May 14, Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that till that date, 4,060 people have entered Assam through Srirampur Gate and 630 people have entered via the Sagolia check gate.
