KOKRAJHAR: The Sick Newborn Care Unit (SNCU) at JWHWKAO Swmbla Basumatary (JSB) Civil Hospital was inaugurated by BTC Chief Executive Member (CEM) Pramod Boro here on Monday.

Executive Member for Health and Family Welfare department, BTC, Arup Kumar Dey, Additional Deputy Commissioner, Chirang, Ringkhang Mashahary and Joint Director Health and Family Welfare, Chirang, Dr. Ratul Chandra Bordoloi were also present on the occasion.

After formally inaugurating the centre, CEM Pramod Boro said the new well-equipped SNCU would help reduce infant mortality rate in the district. He said the JSB Civil hospital already had various medical related machineries, including equipment for newborn babies, but all these were kept aside without installing by the previous government.

"At the Sick Newborn Care Unit, if a newborn immediately after birth needs medical help, it can instantly be given as services are now available in the hospital," he said. He hoped that the JSB Civil Hospital, with the addition of SNCU would able to provide better health care services to the public.

The CEM further said that all the remaining unused machineries presently available in the Civil Hospital would also be made functional within a short period. Expressing concern about prevailing early marriage system in the society, he said, "Early marriage is one of the main causes of unhealthy child as an immature mother cannot deliver a healthy child. So we should immediately stop early marriage activities in the society by generating massive awareness among the public." He also ordered the district health authorities to organize blood donation camps at various locations to encourage the people for blood donation as well as to enhance the stock of blood units available in the hospitals.
