Cachar flood situation grim, 2 persons dead

SILCHAR: The flood situation in the Cachar district is grim as 41,037 people in 138 villages have been affected by the floods. Two persons reportedly died and three more were missing.

As many as 41,037 people in 138 villages of the Cachar district have been affected by the floods due to incessant rains over the past few days. So far, 1685 flood-affected people have taken shelter in 12 relief camps. Crops of 2099 hectares of land in the district have been damaged due to the ongoing floods.

Superintendent of Food and Civil Supplies Department PK Kalita stated that 32 quintals of rice, 6 quintals of pulses, and 1 quintal of 80 kg of salt were allocated for the flood-affected people under Katigorah Assembly Constituency wherein 45 kg of rice,9 kg of pulses,32 litre of edible oil and 72 cartons of mineral water bottles have been allocated for distribution of relief in 3 shelter camps of Silchar Sadar Circle.

Meanwhile, Cachar DC Keerthi Jalli also visited flood-affected areas under Katigorah and Borkhola constituency on Monday and inspected the works being carried out to rescue the flood-affected people.

PK Kalita said that the district has ample stock of essential commodities. "The administration has stepped up surveillance to control the market price of essential commodities," he added. Jalli said, "SDRF, BSF and Assam Rifles have been deployed in the district to rescue flood victims.

In the current phase, 3100 houses in the district have been damaged due to floods. Medical teams are also working round the clock in the shelter camps and flood-affected areas." 109 people trapped in Detochchhara were also airlifted and brought to Kumbhirgram with the help of the Air Force."
