SILCHAR: In light of the ongoing disruptions in road and rail connectivity affecting the transportation system, the Cachar district administration has taken swift and proactive steps to safeguard the availability of essential commodities. District Commissioner Mridul Yadav, chaired a high-level coordination meeting on Thursday to assess the current stock and pricing situation of key necessities, including LPG, petroleum products, and food items.
The meeting witnessed the presence of several top officials including Numal Mahatta, APS, Senior Superintendent of Police, Cachar; Raktim Baruah, ACS, Additional District Commissioner, Cachar; Smti. Junali Devi, ACS, Branch Officer, Food, Public Distribution & Consumer Affairs (FPD&CA); along with representatives from the food grain merchant association, oil companies, and other relevant departments. The primary agenda was to evaluate ongoing market conditions and strategize for effective supply management during the transport crisis.
During the discussions, it was confirmed that there is a sufficient stock of essential items such as LPG and petroleum products to meet the district’s demand for the coming days. The administration has also undertaken initiatives to stabilize the supply of vegetables, especially potatoes. Merchant associations assured that Bengal-origin potatoes are abundantly available, and arrangements have been made to supply them through the “Amar Dukaan” outlets at prices below Rs 25 per kg. However, supplies of potatoes from Uttar Pradesh and Jalandhar remain limited.
To maintain steady availability, LPG and petrol agencies have been directed to rationalize their dispatches to neighboring states such as Tripura, Mizoram, and Manipur. This measure aims to preserve adequate stock within Cachar until full connectivity via Haflong is restored.
Meanwhile, the Department of Food & Civil Supplies is conducting vigilant price monitoring across local markets. Regular dialogue with traders and suppliers is being maintained to deter hoarding and arbitrary price hikes, ensuring that the general public is not burdened by artificial scarcity.
The district administration has appealed to the public to stay composed and refrain from panic buying. Despite the ongoing transportation challenges, robust contingency measures have been implemented to guarantee the uninterrupted supply of all essential commodities, including petroleum products, across the district, stated a press release.
