Silchar: Amid tight security, the first public hearing organised by the State Pollution Control Board on the proposed Doloo Greenfield Airport was held here on Monday. In the backdrop of a case in the Supreme Court challenging the state government’s move to uproot lakhs and lakhs of tea saplings in the proposed site in Doloo tea estate allegedly without any prior environmental clearance, today’s public hearing triggered many administrative and police exercises. However, the entire process passed off peacefully. Later, the Deputy Commissioner, Mridul Yadav, informed the press that altogether 150 memoranda were placed before the panel headed by the Member Secretary of the Pollution Control Board. Nearly 800 people participated in the hearing. 32 persons representing at least 50 organisations presented their views, out of which 26 deliberations were in favour of setting up a greenfield airport in Doloo. Out of the remaining six speakers, three, while not opposing the proposed airport, stressed the proper and smooth rehabilitation of the displaced tea garden labourers. Yadav said the district administration would send a detailed report of the public hearing to the government.
