Centre Moves Paramilitary Forces from J&K to Be Deployed In Assam: Reports

The Central government has withdrawn paramilitary forces from Jammu and Kashmir as law and order situation worsens in Assam with the center going ahead with the debate on the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Bill.

Ten companies of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) have been sent from Jammu and Kashmir to Assam. As per reports, as many as 20 CRPF companies will be moved to Assam from Jammu and Kashmir.

A special train has also been provided to help security personnel reach Assam conveniently.

It may be mentioned here that the home ministry had earlier ordered to induce seven CRPF companies to Manipur on operational grounds. The ministry has now ordered to release the paramilitary forces to the Government of Assam to tackle the law and order situation.

The Centre deployed paramilitary forces in the region to maintain peace and law and order after the revocation of Jammu and Kashmir's special status. The centre decided to abrogate Article 370 of the Constitution in August, which gave special status to the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir.

Army has been deployed in Dibrugarh as protests over the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Bill are turning violent in different parts of Assam. The army has been called out to assist the district administration to avert any untoward incident in the wake of the raging protests against the controversial legislation. The Bill has been tabled in the Rajya Sabha by Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday.

Armed forces have also been deployed in Tripura as a debate continues in the Upper House over the contentious Bill today. Internet and SMS services were suspended in Tripura for 48 hours owing to the ongoing protests. Several students in Dibrugarh sustained injuries during the clash with police personnel. The injured protesting students were taken to the Assam Medical College.
