NAZIRA: The Sapekhati Monday weekly market in Charaideo district has become a symbol of neglect and disarray, causing immense suffering to both buyers and sellers. Despite being a significant revenue generator for the government and Charaideo Zilla Parishad, the market sheds have been reduced to open dustbins, with no attention from the authorities.

The situation is particularly galling given the government’s flagship ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’ initiative, which aims to promote cleanliness and sanitation across the country. The market’s deplorable condition has raised serious questions about the effectiveness of governance and the prioritization of public welfare. The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) Sapekhati Regional Committee had previously submitted a memorandum to the administration, along with protests, demanding the development of the market sheds. However, despite these efforts, the local representatives, Sapekhati Block Development Officer, and Zilla Parishad have failed to take any concrete action. As a result, the traders have threatened to indefinitely close the weekly market if their demands are not met. The deplorable condition of the market sheds has also raised concerns about public health, with many fearing the spread of diseases.

The situation has sparked strong reactions, with many demanding immediate action to improve the market’s conditions.

The Sapekhati weekly market is a lifeline for many in the region, and its neglect has far-reaching consequences for the local economy and public health.
