Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal visits flood-affected area of Gahinpara

BARPETA/PATHSALA: Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Water Resource Minister Keshab Mahanta, Housefed chairman Ranjit Kumar Das, MLAs Pabindra Deka and Ashok Sarma, Barpeta Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police and top officials of various departments on Monday visited the flood-affected area of Gahinpara under Bajali subdivision and assured to repair the Kardoiguri Bamakhata PWD road and the breached embankment near Doul Gosain Than.

The River Pahumara has washed away the embankment and damaged the road, inundating a large area of Bajali subdivision.

The Chief Minister directed the Water Resource Minister to find permanent solution of the perennial flood and erosion in the area after carrying out scientific study of Pahumara River. Later talking to media persons, the Chief Minister said that flood and erosion had been causing devastation every year in the State as nearly 9,000 hectares of land were claimed by erosion every year in the State. He also asserted that the accusations made by opposition that flood-affected people had not received any relief material, were completely baseless and he urged everyone, including journalists, to bring to the notice of the administration if any flood victim was left out of the ambit of relief measures.

Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal also inaugurated the newly-constructed building of Barpeta Sadar Police Station in Barpeta district on Monday. He also inaugurated the new building of Sarbhog Police Station through digital tele-conferencing from Barpeta. The new buildings have been built by the State Government under Mission for Overall Improvement of Thana for Responsive Image (MOITRI) Scheme.

Speaking in a meeting that was held to mark the inauguration of Barpeta Sadar PS, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said that Assam Police were serving the people with sincerity and dedication. He also warned that the State Government would not tolerate any wrong doing by police personnel and would take stern action against those found guilty. He said that the State Government had taken up the MOITRI scheme to strengthen infrastructure of the police stations in order to create better working environment and boost the morale of the police force. He, at the same time, also stressed the importance of maintaining human rights by police in performing their duty. The Chief Minister also urged the police personnel to work in close coordination with the Citizens' Committees for maintaining peace in society.

Chief Minister Sonowal distributed ex-gratia cheque of Rs. 4 lakh to the next of kin of flood victims of the district in the programme.

Later, the Chief Minister also inaugurated the newly-constructed building of Sarthebari Police Station at Sarthebari in Barpeta district.
