GOLAGHAT: The members of All Assam Chutia Students' Union (AACSU), Golaghat subdivisional committee staged a two hour sit-in near the Deputy Commissioner's office on Saturday demanding autonomous council and ST status for the Chutia community.

Activists shouted various slogans against the Narendra Modi-led BJP government as well as the Sarbananda Sonowal-led Assam Government. The Chutia Students' Union criticized the government for betraying the Chutia community in providing autonomous council.

Talking to the media, the general secretary of All Assam Chutia Students' Union, Mohen Bora said that the Sarbananda Sonowal government cheated the Chutia community with false promises. By promising to provide ST status to six ethnic communities, the BJP government came to power in Assam. But out of six communities, the BJP government provided autonomous councils to Moran, Motak and Koch Rajbongshi communities while depriving the Chutia community, said Bora. He added that the government wanted to divide the ethnic communities. The students' body threatened that if the government did not provide ST status to the Chutia community before the 2021 election, the government would face massive protests in the coming days.
