LAKHIMPUR: With issuance of the Municipal Board election notification by the Assam State Election Commission on Wednesday, the election process has kicked off in Lakhimpur district too along the rest of the State with immediate enforcement of model code of conduct in the respective municipal board areas.
Notably, the polling to 80 municipal boards across the State will be held on March 6 according to the announcement made by the State Election Commission. The last date for filing nominations has been fixed on February 15 and scrutiny of the applications will be conducted on February 17. On the other hand, the last date for withdrawal of the candidature is February 20 while the counting will be held on March 9.
This year the urban body poll will be held for four municipal boards under Lakhimpur district. These municipal boards are North Lakhimpur Municipal Boards, Bihpuria Municipal Board, Narayanpur Municipal Board and Dhakuakhana Municipal Board. All these four municipal boards have covered a total of 52 wards under the urban areas of the district.
There are 21 wards in North Lakhimpur Municipal Board. This year, the number of the wards under this civic body of the district has increased by seven from the previous 14 wards after delimitation process. During the process, Ward No 2 was bifurcated to two wards christening them as Ward No 2(A) and Ward No. 2(B). Similarly, Ward No. 3 was bifurcated to two wards as Ward No. 3(A) and Ward No. 3(B). Ward No. 5 was also delimited to two wards which have been christened as Ward No. 5(A) and Ward No 5(B). Similarly, Ward No. 12 was bifurcated to Ward No. 12 (A) and Ward No. 12(B). On the other hand, Ward No. 14 was bifurcated to highest four wards. They have been delimited as Ward No. 14(A), Ward No. 14 (B), Ward No. 14(C) and Ward No. 14 (D). A total of 45,766 voters will exercise their franchise in the municipal election under North Lakhimpur Municipal Board.
The civic body poll will be held for 10 wards under Narayanpur Municipal Board. This year the Narayanpur Nagar Samiti was upgraded to Narayanpur Municipal Board by issuing notification and conducting ward delimitation process. Four wards out of previous 6 Nagar Samiti wards were delimited under this civic body. These delimited wards were Ward No. 1, Ward No 3, Ward No. 5 and Ward No. 6. They have been delimited as Ward No. 1 (A), Ward No. 1 (B), Ward No. 3 (A), Ward No. 3 (B), Ward No. 5 (A), Ward No. 5 (B), Ward No. 6 (A) and Ward No. 6 (B). A total of 4272 voters cast their votes in the urban body poll under Narayanpur Municipal Board.
On the other hand, the election will be held at 11 wards under Bihpuria Municipal Board and 10 wards under Dhakuakhana Municipal Board. Four wards under Dhakuakhana Municipal Board are unreserved (open for all) while three wards are reserved for women, one is reserved for women belonging to Scheduled Tribe and one is reserved for women belonging to Scheduled Caste. A total of 9,147 voters will exercise their franchise in Bihpuria Municipal Board while 10,105 will do the same in Dhakuakhana Municipal Board.
