DHUBRI: The people of Barpeta Road are facing a great deal of inconvenience due to closure of railway's ramp foot bridge by the railway department, which connects North and South Barpeta Road adjacent to railway station since a few months.
Pedestrians typically cross the railroad track at a level crossing or via a footbridge on a railroad ramp. But presence of rack point have created inconveniences for the people as waggons are always found standing on the tracks. In these circumstances, pedestrians and two-wheeler riders prefer footbridges.
Local people alleged that due to closure of ramp foot bridge, residents of North Barpeta Road and nearby areas have been facing a great deal of hardship to connect the south Barpeta Road where not only main market but also all schools, colleges, hospitals, police station, banks, shops, bus stands, doctors' chambers, medical shops, government offices and National Highway are located.
Talking to The Sentinel, a prominent resident of Barpeta Road, Alokesh Bayon informed that there is another road, which is located near railway gate on east side through which cars, buses, trucks, tractors and other heavy vehicles pass through.
"But due to huge traffic coupled with frequent closure of the railway gate for train crossing, it creates a lot of traffic congestion on the manned level crossing for one to two hours. Further, there is a huge rush during morning due to office and school time. As the Rajdhani Express and other south bound trains pass through that time, the gate remains closed and create unprecedented traffic congestion. Moreover, it is the time for picnic in Manas National Park but due to prolong closure of gate, picnickers and tourists as well get delayed," Bayon rued.
Recently local people of Barpeta Road submitted a memorandum to the Rangia Divisional Railway Manager, Vijay Kumar Srivastava while he was on a visit to Barpeta Road. The memorandum urged upon him to re-open the ramp foot bridge at the earliest and ease the hardship of pedestrians and two-wheelers.
