TINSUKIA: The Flood Erosion Resistance Struggle Forum (FERSF) Dibrugarh and Tinsukia district has urged the Chief Minister of Assam to take up urgent measures to protect Dibrugarh town and the entire river bank of the Brahmaputra in Dibrugarh and Tinsukia districts following change of course of the Dibang River from its original course.

Severe erosion has posed a major threat to Dibrugarh town. Though the Water Resources department started work of restoration of the river bank in both districts, due to some misunderstandings or other reasons, the people of Sadiya along with some organizations have stopped dredging of the Dibang River. But reverting the Dibang River to its original course is the most essential part of the work to restore the entire river bank of Brahmaputra in both districts.

The present critical situation has arisen in Dibrugarh town and also at Kordoiguri in Tinsukia district along with recent severe erosion at Maijan near Dibrugarh town, Bindhakota Mulukgoan, Dinjan, etc. areas of Dibrugarh district and Rangora, Kordoiguri, Hatighulee etc. in the Tinsukia district due to changing course of river Dibang. During physical inspection of the erosion-effected area of Dibrugarh town on Monday, the Forum expressed satisfaction at the measures taking up by the Department of Water Resource to restore the river bank near DTP Dyke, but previous experiences indicate that these techniques are not enough to save Dibrugarh town permanently, it is necessary to make some small spheres in between previous old bolder spheres at Hatighulee, Kordoiguri , Guijan, Rangagora etc. areas of Tinsukia district, said Binod Kedia, president of FERSF.
