LAKHIMPUR: The North Lakhimpur Press Club (NLPC) has demanded Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal to ensure security to the life of working journalists of the State. The common forum of the headquarter journalists of Lakhimpur district has also demanded the Chief Minister to arrest the culprits who were involved in the alleged murder of Kakopothar journalist Parag Bhuyan and in physical harassment on Mirja journalist Milan Mahanta.

Regarding these issues, NLPC submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister through the Deputy Commissioner of Lakhimpur on Tuesday. In the memorandum, NLPC said that the responsible working journalists of the State had to face life threats issued by a section of anti-social and unscrupulous elements in the current times.

"It is a serious issue and such incidents are an intentional attack on the fourth pillar of the democracy, done with a view to affect the responsibility and freedom of media. The suspected murder of Kakopothar journalist Parag Bhuyan and physical harassment on Mirja journalist Milan Mahanta are the latest examples of this attack. Under such circumstances, our press club has demanded your direct intervention and effective initiatives to ensure the security to the life of the working journalists of the State and to arrest those who were involved in the alleged killing of Parag Bhuyan and physical harassment on Milan Mahanta," the memorandum stated.

On the other hand, the members of the NLPC staged protest against the growing threat to the working journalists of the State on Tuesday. In this connection, the journalists of the press club carried out their day-to-day duties wearing black badges. Notably, NLPC, by holding a protest meeting on Monday, took a resolution to boycott all kinds of government programmes and reporting government news until the accused people involved in the physical harassment of Milan Mahanta were arrested.
