DIBRUGARH: Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Thursday inaugurated two police stations - Lahowal and Duliajan - built under the Mission for Overall Improvement of Thana for Responsive Image (MOITRI) and dedicated them for the service of the people.

Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister Sonowal said that after assuming power in the year 2016, his government had dedicated itself to the socio-economic development of the people of the State and had been working on 24X7 basis to empower the people. Referring to the abysmal condition of police stations during the previous government in the State, Sonowal said that though police personnel had dedicated themselves for the safety and security of the lives and properties of the State, the previous government did not do anything for lifting the morale of the policemen and face-lifting the images of the police stations.

Without any infrastructural support, the policemen had to work. The condition of barracks was also very deplorable. However, the present State Government, moved by the mantra of NarendraModi's Smart Police, envisaged MOITRI scheme and made budgetary provision in the first budget of the government. In the first phase, steps were taken for infrastructural development of 73 police stations. Moreover, steps were also taken for the construction of 100 barracks. Sonowal said that in the wake of development of science and technology, the commission of crimes had also undergone a sea change. However, the State police, taking the help of science and technology, had achieved tremendous successes in dealing with crimes and their manifestations.

Chief Minister Sonowal also said that with the help of MOITRI scheme, effort had been made to transform police into friends of people. He said that during the COVID-19 pandemic and flood, the humane face of police was adequately reflected. He also observed that Assam Police had achieved remarkable success in dealing with crimes. They have also attained success in various inquiries associated with crimes against women and thereby lent dignity to women.

Similarly, in dealing with rhino poaching and drug smuggling, the police had achieved laudable success, said Sonowal. He also said that in sync with the State Government's principle of 'zero tolerance', Assam Police had been working diligently to wipe out corruption. He also hoped that the new police stations of Lahowal and Duliajan upgraded under the MOITRI scheme would lift the morale of the police personnel.
