Boko: Assam Pradesh Congress Committee, in the presence of Chaygaon MLA Rekibuddin Ahmed, organized a foot rally to protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act at Chaygaon in Kamrup district on Sunday.

Former Chief Minister of Assam, Tarun Gogoi, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Ripun Borah, Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly, Debabrata Saikia, former PWD minister Ajanta Neog and Rupahihat MLA Nurul Huda took part in the rally. The rally started from Chaygaon Rajiv Bhavan. Before starting the rally, all dignitaries paid floral tribute to CAA protest martyr Dipanjal Das.

Before starting the rally, a public meeting was held in Chaygaon Rajiv Bhavan. The welcome speech was delivered by APCC president Ripun Borah. In his speech he said that the APCC had started the foot rally from Sadia on December 22, 2019 and would finish it in March, 2020. He said the government was trying to give Assam the burden of migrants when already 3.21 crore people live in this State. “The Congress has been opposing the Act since 2016 because it is totally unconstitutional,” said Borah.

Former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said that Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and minister Himanta Biswa Sarma thought that they were kings of Assam and they could do anything. But they forgot that they formed their government with the support of the public. “Now people have come out to the streets to protest against CAA. But they are neglecting the people of Assam,” said Gogoi. He also slammed the government for the death of five youths who were taking part peacefully in the protest against CAA.

Similar rally was also organized by Boko Assembly MLA and Assam Women Congress Committee president Nandita Das in the presence of APCC president Ripun Borah. The rally started from Turukpara village on NH-17 and concluded in the Boko High School field. After the rally a public meeting was organized in protest against CAA. APCC president Ripun Borah and former ministers Rokibul Hussain and Ajanta Neog took part in the protest meeting. In this meeting, Loachan Kalita, who was seriously injured in police firing during CAA protest on December 12, 2019, was felicitated by the Congress. APCC president Ripun Borah also gave Rs 20,000 to Loachan Kalita.
