Meghalaya Congress slams NPP gag order on Citizenship Amendment Act

Shillong: The State Congress leadership is not amused at the Nationalist People’s Party (NPP) gagging its members from speaking anything on the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

Reacting to the NPP notification, senior Congress leader and party spokesman Zenith Sangma during an interaction with The Sentinel on Saturday said, “The gagging by the NPP reflects its fright; least the people who are part of it speaks against the CAA”, besides adding that the act of the NPP also amounts to violation of the freedom of speech and expression.

Taking the opportunity of taking pot shots at the NPP, Zenith Sangma said, “The NPP leadership is scared at those people in power at the Centre.” The Congress leader further added that Conrad K Sangma always wanted to be in the good books of his two “Godfathers” Narendra Modi and Amit Shah at the cost of the interest of the people of the State.

The Congress leader also doubts the present dispensation’s seriousness to pursue the demand for the introduction of the ILP in the State. Sangma stated, “I know the mindset and mentality of the duo at the Centre and there is a strong chance that they will either offer ILP and then remove the Sixth Scheduled status enjoyed by the State”, claimed the Congress spokesman.
