NAGAON: In a strong display of solidarity and unwavering commitment to democratic values, senior leaders of the Indian National Congress today visited Reetam Singh, the state Spokesperson of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee, who has been jailed in Morigaon for his statement against an MLA in the social media.

The delegation comprised Charan Singh Sapra, National Spokesperson of the Indian National Congress and Head of the media coordinating team for the Assam Assembly Elections, Nighat Abbass, National spokesperson AICC, and Harshad Sarma, National spokesperson AICC. The leaders met Reetam Singh at Morigaon Jail today and extended to him and his family the full legal and moral support of the Congress party.

Following the visit, the Congress national team addressed a press conference at Nagaon Rajiv Bhavan and alleged that such politically motivated persecution is a stark reminder of BJP’s growing intolerance and its blatant abuse of state power to crush democratic opposition. The Congress party stands firm against such authoritarianism.

The AICC team categorically condemned the actions of the Assam Government and assured Reetam Singh that his courage in speaking truth to power will not go unacknowledged. The team also conveyed that the matter will be urgently escalated to senior leadership within the AICC, and appropriate legal redressal mechanisms are being pursued.

“No Congress worker will ever be abandoned or silenced for standing up against injustice,” said Charan Singh Sapra. The morale of our cadre will not be allowed to waver and if BJP believes it can intimidate the Congress family through vendetta politics, they are gravely mistaken, he added.

It was also informed that the national team has directed the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee to remain in constant contact with Reetam Singh and his family, and to ensure that they receive every form of support, legal, emotional, and logistical necessary during this time.

The Indian National Congress reiterated its belief in democratic principles, civil liberties, and the constitutional right to free speech. The arrest of a young political voice for voicing criticism is not just an attack on the Congress party, but an attack on India’s democracy, they further alleged.
