Conrad Sangma: Next Round of Talks Regarding Border Issues Will Take Place Soon

Discussions will be towards solving disputes across six regions of the state.

SHILLONG: Conrad Sangma, the chief minister of the state of Meghalaya has announced that the next round of talks with Assam will happen soon. This meeting will aim to solve the problems regarding the border between the two states.

The two states will host the second phase of discussion to solve border disputes in six areas of difference between the two states.

"Within the next few weeks, we will try to meet the regional committees and the chief ministers together to take the talks forward," Conrad Sangma mentioned.

The six areas of conflict about which the discussions will be held in this phase are located across the districts of West Khasi Hills, Ri Bhoi and West Jaintia Hills in Meghalaya.

The Meghalaya government had previously said that their topmost priority is to respect the local views while resolving the border disputes with Assam in this phase of the talks.

Meghalaya and Assam share a total of 885 km long inter-state border with Assam.

In the first phase of talks, discussions were held regarding six disputed areas out of a total of twelve. The discussion was followed by the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the two neighbouring states.

The second phase of talks between the governments of the two states will take place amid local protests. These protests are being carried out by the localities who were unhappy with the decisions taken between the states in the first round of talks.

The Union Home Minister, Amit Shah also called on the state governments of the Northeastern states of India to solve their internal border problems through discussions. He also told the leaders to do it as soon as possible so that the region can develop a stable economic condition and thus take quick strides towards more development. He said this on his recent visit to Guwahati for the meeting of the North East Council.
