NAGAON: With a daylong programme, Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday visited Nagaon and ceremonially inaugurated a newly constructed concrete bridge over Kolong River and a new park constructed in front of Nagaon circuit house.

Besides, Dr Sarma also attended the open session of the 109th Nagaon Bhugali Bihu celebration, being organized by Nagaon Bhogali Bihu Udjapon Samittee at Nagaon Nehrubali field from January 13 and a special felicitation programme held at Nowgong College (autonomous) in gratitude for the decision of the State government to uplift the college to the standard of a State university.

While addressing on the occasion at the 109th Nagaon Bhugali Bihu celebration at Nagaon Nehrubali field, Dr Sarma said, "Nagaon is always ahead in the entire State as the forerunner in formal celebration of Bhogali Bihu and this celebration of Bhogali Bihu apparently has identified the greater Assamese nation as a rich nation."

Referring to the ongoing developmental projects and other schemes being implemented in Nagaon to set Nagaon as one of the progressive districts in the State, Dr Sarma said, "The academic session for medical science in Nagaon Medical College and Hospital which is being constructed at Mohkhuli on the outskirts of the town, will start in next year. Similarly, the preliminary work for the uplift of historic Nowgong College (autonomous) to a State university, will be started from April in the current year." He further added, "The entire work for uplift - including construction of academic building as well as hostels would be completed within the next three years so that the new courses under Nagaon State university could be started from 2025 onwards."

Meanwhile, while addressing the felicitation programme held at Swahid Anil Bora auditorium in historic Nowgong College (autonomous) Dr Sarma again reiterated the same saying that the government is committed for fulfilling all infrastructural and academic needs of the educational institution within the stipulated time frame. He also urged all stakeholders to come up with suggestions on subjects and courses to be imparted and ways to make it a top most university in the days to come.

Dr Sarma also appealed to the alumni, faculties and those ex students of the institution who are currently residing in foreign countries to be a strong part of it while declaring it as a State university.

Following the felicitation programme, Dr Sarma went to Mrityunjay Mandir where he offered his prayers and also laid the foundation stone of a PWD road. During his trip to Nagaon, Dr Sarma was accompanied by local MLA Rupak Sarma, Borhampur MLA Jitu Goswami and Raha MLA Sashi Kanta Das.
