Jorhat- On Wednesday, a 20-year-old woman who had tested positive for Covid-19 gave birth to a baby girl while being transported to Jorhat Medical College and Hospital.

The woman had gone to her parent's house in Cintamonigarh village, Bhogamukh, about 23 kilometres from the Jorhat town, when she experienced labour pains, a source informed. When taken to Bhogamukh PHC and screened for COVID-19 there, she was found to be infected with the deadly virus. Read more

Her condition deteriorated in the ambulance, which was sent from the PHC to take her to JMCH (Jorhat Medical College and Hospital) right away, so the crew parked the vehicle on the side of the road and helped in the delivery of the baby, saving both mother and the newborn girl. 

"The woman has been admitted to Covid ward in the hospital and the infant has been kept separately in another ward. The Covid-19 test on the baby is most likely negative," the Superintendent of JMCH Dr Purnima Baruah.Dr Baruah also heaped praises on the ambulance healthcare team for their effective responsiveness in handling the critical situation and said that woman should have been assessed before being sent here. 

As of Wednesday, Assam lodged over 5,657 new cases of the coronavirus infection, taking the total tally of cases in the state to over 3.1 lakh. 71 cases of COVID-induced fatalities have been reported from Assam in the last 24 hours, taking the death toll in the state to 1,909 cases. The total active cases in the state, as of Wednesday, amounts to 40,970. 

The highest COVID-19 infection contributing district continues to be Kamprup Metro with 1,456 new cases followed by Kamrup Rural with 460 cases, Dibrugarh with 381 cases and Nagaon with 293 cases. 

The positivity rate remains 8.85% while the recovery rate for this deadly infectious disease stands at 85.74%.
