COVID second wave sending ominous signal in Barak Valley

SILCHAR: The escalating COVID second wave that continues to take in its grip persons of all ages has become a menacing phenomena in Barak Valley. SMCH state as well as private hospitals with their infrastructure have come under pressure due to new cases adding to the list of patients under treatment. Since the new variant, according to medical experts, is exhibiting symptoms quite different from the first wave, treatment has to be reoriented to meet the challenge. The problem with a number of cases is not only other complications in the body but their delay admission for treatment.

District Media Expert, Health, SumanChowdhury told mediapersons that some cases being admitted in SMCH are found to carry lung infection, giving indication that they have ignored the symptoms sitting at home instead of consulting competent doctors. This, he said, is a cause of worry. He advised in general that the moment any one feels uneasiness in breathing or developing the symptom, one should not delay in consultation with doctor. He said beds in COVID ward of SMCH are still available.

SumanChowdhury further said with vaccination being open for 18 years and above from today, slot for 500 was allotted across Cachar. Almost 97 per cent of them got vaccinated. This is no doubt a good symptom. This is one side of the story. But the report from SMCH is ominous. Today, as disclosed by DrBhaskar Gupta, Vice-Principal, SMCH, 5 persons died of Corona. They are Shekhar Chandra Das (71), MridulKanti Roy (50), SukhsagarDutta (69), Debi Kanungo (70) and PrabhashChakraborty. DrBhaskar Gupta said 163 are active cases in SMCH as on date, 123 are in COVID ward, 36 in ICU, 10 on ventilator and 40 on oxygen support. 36 patients are in home isolation.
