DOOMDOOMA: Present-day writers - especially those who write frequently in newspapers - lacks serious study. This was observed by Journalist Arup Barkataki, sectional editor of the supplement 'Prantor' of Dainik Janambhumi, while inaugurating the book 'Bauddhik Sanghat Aru Jiwanar Bishad Ityadi' at Doomdooma Press Club on Sunday. He divulged that he was surprised to see that many writers who write quite frequently did not study much. It got reflection in their writings, he said. He praised writer Birke Bahudur Thapa for his hard study before devoting to writing and for penning write-ups on various topics in newspapers and periodicals for over three decades. He cited the example of a nobel laureate in economist who laid down a theory for reconstruction of a society out of devastation and exhorted everybody to think positively so that we could too rebuild our society despite facing all the odds. The writers had a great role to play in this respect, he added.

On the other hand, columnist and Assistant Professor of English, Doomdooma College, Shivajit Dutta in his speech as chief speaker of the symposium on the topic 'The Hazards of Intellectuals, Present Generation and Our Future' that was held before the inauguration of the book, explained the gathering about the ill effects of capitalism on the society in the context of globalisation. He said that present day society had become consumer-centric and profit motive had become uppermost in the minds of new generation. "As a teacher, we do career counselling to the students now-a-days instead of telling them to engage themselves in the pursuit for truth," he lamented. "So it is the duty of all of us to look into these aspects and work together for advancement of our society," he concluded.

The meeting was well attended by a galaxy of dignitaries which included journalist Arjun Baruah, TZXX president Atul Sarmah, Tinsukia Zila Xahitya Xebi Mancha president, eminent poet Sarifa Khatan Chaudhury, former President of Assam Science Writrrs' Association Dhiren Deka and others. Bishmita Das, a student of the school where Birke B Thapa teaches, enthralled the audience by her solo performance. Renowned artiste and poet Rajen Khound recited two self-composed poems. Writer Thapa expressed his profound gratefulness to all present.
