Darrang District Hosts Road Safety Awareness Meetings and Roadshows for National Road Safety Month

Synchronizing with the countrywide celebration of the National Road Safety Month, road safety awareness meetings and awareness roadshows were organized in different areas of Darrang district.

MANGALDAI: Synchronizing with the countrywide celebration of the National Road Safety Month, road safety awareness meetings and awareness roadshows were organized in different areas of Darrang district. As a part of this month-long program, the District Transport Department with active cooperation of ‘Society for Economic and Social Aid’ (SESA), a premier non-government organization, organized an awareness program at the Public Bus Station at Bhebarghat here recently. Legislator Basanta Das, inaugurating the programme, highlighted several incidents of road safety norms by the commercial passenger transporters, bike riders, and pillion riders as a whole and also expressed concern on the growing habits of consuming liquor by a section of local youths once the Sun sets and driving vehicles under intoxication. He urged the transport authority to conduct checks against drunken driving at all the entry and exit points of the headquarter towns at the same time. Newly joined District Transport Officer Leeyen Hazarika in his address, underscored the five basic rules of safe driving. He also shed light on different penalty provisions for violators of traffic rules on the roads. 

Enforcement Inspector Om Prakash Upadhyay, President of Darrang Bus Owners’ Association Munin  Dutta, senior journalists Bhargab Kr Das and Mayukh Goswami, drivers and staff of a section of commercial passenger vehicles, and students also took part in the awareness campaign.

It may be mentioned here that Darrang district witnessed a total of 240 road accidents in 2024. According to the data available with the District Transport department, a total of 104 persons have lost their lives in those accidents while 218 persons sustained injuries. However, the scenario improved in comparison to 2023 where a total of 129 people died and another 262 got injured in 311 accidents that occurred in the district.
