Darrang Police Nab Three Poachers, Arms & Ammunition Recovered

The Darrang Police, in their continuing intensified operation against the organized armed gang of poachers and illegal arms smugglers, have made a significant achievement with the arrest of three notorious poachers and the recovery of arms in two separate incidents.

A team of police led by Deputy Superintendent of Police (HQ) Mamani Hazarika, accompanied by Sub-Inspector Twinkle Goswami, Sub-Inspectors Dantejit Deuri and Hrishikesh Barman, on the night of October 29, conducted a raid at Jaguar Char- a remote char under Shyampur Police Station - and arrested Jakir Hussain (55), originally an inhabitant of Morigaon district and recovered two country-made .303 rifles along with live ammunition and one deer horn from his possession.

On the other hand, in-charge of Silbori Police outpost, Niraj Alam Choudhury made a successful trap to arrest notorious poacher Nur Islam of village No. 3 Mouzadar Gaon under Lumding Police Station and Jalal Uddin of village Harmoti Gaon under Jakhalabondha Police Station in Nagaon district and recovered one pistol with several rounds of live ammunition from their possession. The arrested Nur Islam is reportedly involved in the killing of rhinos in Kaziranga National Park. However, his attempt at poaching in Orang National Park has been foiled several times due to the prompt initiative of Darrang Police.

Informing this at a press meet in his office on Wednesday afternoon, Darrang Superintendent of Police Amrit Bhuyan appreciated the cooperation and support from villagers in getting timely information on the movement and activities of the armed gang of poachers. “The Darrang Police have been able to make a good relation with the people living in the fringe areas of Orang National Park which has led to the prompt arrest of the poachers and recovery of firearms by the ‘Men in Khaki’,” he said.

On the other hand, the Mangaldai Police also arrested absconding teacher of Borongabari LP School, Dhiren Deka who was allegedly involved in outraging of the modesty of a Class IV girl student, that too in the classroom, in broad daylight few days back.
