LAKHIMPUR: Over thousand families living in Matmora area under Dhakuakhana Assembly constituency of Lakhimpur district, who have turned landless due to flood and erosion caused by the mighty Brahmaputra, have raised strong demands to the State government for their immediate rehabilitation on Sunday.

Regarding the sensitive issue, a large public meeting was organized at Mising Baligaon under Matmora area under the auspices of Kherkota Noi-poriya Punar Sangsthapon Dabi Samiti. The meeting commenced with Abhiram Pegu, the president of the organization, in the chair. In the meeting, a number of speakers delivered their speeches expressing vehement resentment against the government for 'depriving' them of rehabilitation and compensation for long a time.

Notably, over thousand families living at 13 villages under Matmora and Kherkota Gaon Panchayats under Dhakuakhana Revenue Circle had lost their lands and properties at different times being affected by the flood and erosion caused by the River Brahmaputra since 1990. According to the information disclosed by the organization in the meeting, 145 families of Matmora, 149 families of Mising Baligaon, 149 families of Tekeliphuta, 135 families of Orkep, 161 families of Janji, 62 families of Modarguri, 32 families of Bali Modarguri, 25 families of Juriya, 98 families of Khamon Birina and 25 families of Bahir Bogori have lost their lands and properties due to the Brahmaputra flood and erosion till date. But these landless families have not received rehabilitation and any compensation from the government. Though the former Congress-led government promised them to rehabilitate, it never came into effect during their regime. Similarly, the landless families have not got any response from the BJP-led State government to have their burning, long-pending problems resolved despite their consecutive prayers and petitions. Under such circumstances, the landless families were compelled to reiterate their demand for their immediate rehabilitation through the public meeting.
