The incident took place at Pathali Pahar in Lakhimpur. As per reports, the girl, a student of Sankardev College, was returning home with a friend after attending classes when two youths, who came in a car, met them. The youth (who poured acid on the girl) asked her to sit in the car and on her refusal to do so, poured acid on her body.
The accused youth's family had reportedly gone to the girl's house a few days before the incident with a proposal of marriage but her family turned it down.
