DIBRUGARH: Dibrugarh district unit of Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP), by issuing a press communiqué, has unequivocally condemned the rape incident that allegedly took place at a private nursing home on June 24 and demanded stern punishment of the accused mentioned in the FIR as lodged by a lady doctor at the Barbari Police outpost.

The victim, a lady doctor by profession, was on COVID duty along with her colleague, Dr. Nayan Jyoti Deka, at a private medical establishment here. Accused Dr Deka allegedly did the heinous crime in an inebriated condition when she was taking rest in her assigned rest room after having dinner with Dr Deka at the canteen in the 5th floor of the medical establishment.

Dr Deka allegedly invited the lady doctor, who hails from Dadra & Nagar Haveli, for dinner. Dr Deka, as alleged, offered her a peg of vodka. After consuming the same, she felt sick and rushed to her rest room. On the basis of the victim's FIR lodged at the Barbari Police Station on Thursday morning, police registered a case (no 1222/21) under section 376 /328 of Indian Penal Code and took Dr Nayan Jyoti Deka under their custody.

Superintendent of Police Shwetank Mishra told media persons that the doctor was arrested on the basis of the complaint filed by the lady doctor. "We also performed medical examination of the victim," he said. However, the SP said that the medical report of the victim was yet to be received by them. Accused Dr Deka was sent to judicial custody after police produced him before the court.

The AJYCP, district unit president Bhaven Sonowal and general secretary, in their statement, also demanded cancellation of the medical certificate of arrested Dr Deka for commission of such a heinous crime.

District AJYCP leaders, while hailing frontline workers for their service towards treatment of COVID patients, have also appealed to the owners of nursing homes scattered in the district to charge a nominal price against treatment of COVID patients in their respective establishments, and also requested them not to force them to launch a democratic stir against such practices.

Meanwhile, organizing secretary of Dibrugarh Chetna Progotisheel Nari Santha, Aparna Bora condemned the incident and demanded an exemplary punishment of accused Dr Deka. She, in the same breath, also said, "The rape incident of the lady doctor by her own colleague has once again proved that working women are not yet safe in their respective working place and have been undergoing sexual abuse and mental harassment in the private as well as government and semi-government establishments." She appealed to the government to take all necessary measures for preventing physical and mental harassment of working women.
