DIBRUGARH: Dibrugarh Press Club submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma seeking his intervention to commence regular evening flights from Dibrugarh Airport.
The memorandum was handed over at the CM Secretariat in Dibrugarh on Monday with the Chief Minister assuring necessary action on the matter. The memorandum highlighted the significance of evening flight operations, pointing out that Dibrugarh Airport has been equipped with night landing facilities since 2010.
However, these facilities remain underutilized, with only delayed flights occasionally operating during night hours. For 14 years, passengers have been deprived of regular evening or night flights, despite repeated appeals by the Press Club to Union Civil Aviation Ministers and other authorities.
Dibrugarh, known as the “Tea City of India,” is a crucial industrial hub for Assam and the Northeast, hosting major industries like tea, oil, coal, polymer, and tourism. The absence of evening flights has been a longstanding issue, with airlines reportedly expressing interest but unable to proceed due to a lack of operational readiness.
“Expedite the commencement of regular evening flights from Dibrugarh Airport and establish night connections to major domestic destinations such as Guwahati, Kolkata, Delhi, Bangalore, and Mumbai,” the memorandum stated.
Additionally, the Dibrugarh Press Club underscored the airport’s potential to operate international flights to Southeast Asian destinations like Singapore and Bangkok, which could significantly enhance regional trade and tourism.
