DIBRUGARH: A Food Safety Training and Certification (FoSTaC) programme was conducted in Dibrugarh on Friday in collaboration with Nestle India Limited and their training partner, the National Association of Street Vendors of India (NASVI). A total of 60 street food vendors were certified under the initiative aimed at ensuring safer food practices in the informal food sector.
The training was conducted in two separate batches of 30 participants each at the Dibrugarh Municipal Corporation (DMC) conference hall. The sessions focused on vital topics such as safe food handling, personal hygiene, and basic sanitation—equipping participants with essential knowledge to maintain food safety standards.
The FoSTaC programme, an initiative by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), is designed to build awareness and capacity among food handlers across various sectors. In Dibrugarh, the effort marks a commendable stride toward improving the quality of street food while simultaneously boosting the confidence of consumers.
At the end of the training, all 60 participants received official certification, adding credibility to their profession and empowering them with skills that align with national food safety guidelines. Organisers expressed hope that such efforts would create a ripple effect in promoting safer, cleaner street food culture in the region. It may be mentioned that the programme is being held under Nestle India’s flagship initiative, ‘Serve Safe Food’.
The programme, launched in ten districts of Assam in collaboration with the Food Safety Department, Government of Assam, and the National Association of Street Vendors of India (NASVI), will train over 2,500 street food vendors across the ten districts in the state. Targeted districts include Kamrup (Metro), Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Sivasagar, Jorhat, Cachar, Nalbari, Barpeta, Bongaigaon, and Nagaon.
Already more than 92,800 vendors across 26 states and four Union Territories have benefited from the initiative since its inception, empowering street food sellers with the knowledge and skills needed to ensure public health and safety.
