GUWAHATI: In a significant development, Nestlé India has extended its flagship initiative, ‘Serve Safe Food’, to Assam. The programme, launched in collaboration with the Food Safety Department, Government of Assam, and the National Association of Street Vendors of India (NASVI), will train over 2,500 street food vendors across key districts in the state.

The training will cover essential aspects such as hygiene, safe food handling, waste management, and basic entrepreneurship. Targeted districts include Kamrup (Metro), Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Sivasagar, Jorhat, Cachar, Nalbari, Barpeta, Bongaigaon, and Nagaon.

More than 92,800 vendors across 26 states and four Union Territories have benefited from the initiative since its inception, empowering street food sellers with the knowledge and skills needed to ensure public health and safety.

“Assam’s food is an integral element of its rich culture. We aim to take it to everyone—residents and tourists alike,” said Anupam Gogoi, Food Analyst, Commissionerate of Food Safety, Government of Assam. “I am grateful for the collaboration, which is equipping our street vendors with critical food safety knowledge,” he added.

Taruna Saxena, Head of Sustainability and Societal Initiatives at Nestlé India, added, “This initiative ensures safer, more hygienic street food experiences while supporting livelihoods and preserving culinary heritage.”
