DIBRUGARH: The people of Dihing Than village are having a harrowing time due to erosion caused by Buri Dihing River. Dihing Than village is situated at Kalakhowa under Moran constituency in Dibrugarh district. More than 200 houses were washed away in the river. The villagers are living in fear and an uncertain future. Flood and erosion are a curse for the people of the village because every year they face the same problem.

"Our village is shrinking due to constant erosion from Buri Dihing River. We are having sleepless nights due to erosion. As of now, over 200 houses were washed away in the river," said a villager.

He said, "Moran MLA Chakradhar Gogoi came to our village and assured us of help but till date nothing has been done to solve our problem. Since our childhood we are facing erosion problem but till date nothing has happened."

Meanwhile, some of the villagers are constructing their houses in a safer location for fear of erosion. The people were seen shifting their useful things to another place because the river is shrinking due to erosion.

"Huge hectares of land mass were washed away in the river due to the erosion. We urged the government to take immediate step to rehabilitate us. We are not safe in this area because of the erosion. The political leaders have used us as 'vote bank' for their own benefits. They are not concerned about solving our problems. During election, the political leaders come to us pleading for votes and assure to solve the problem of erosion but after elections are over they are not bothered about our problems," a 57 year-old Rupeswar Das said.
