Erosion poses serious threat to Gerimari and Chereng villages

MANGALDAI: Though the flood situation has improved, erosion has turned out to be a serious threat in some parts of Darrang district. Erosion has posed a serious threat to No 1 Gerimari and Mowamari-Chereng village under Mowamari Gaon Panchayat here. The fury of the flood water has already left four families homeless in the village Gerimari. The erosion has already posed a threat to a large number of families residing along the bank of the river for a long time, besides public institutions like educational and religious institutions spreading over more than a kilometre. The people of the locality have demanded the competent authorities for urgent protection measures and necessary rehabilitation packages for the victim families before the onslaught of another fresh wave of flood. Meanwhile, the villagers have expressed their satisfaction over the visit of the Circle Officer of Mangaldai Revenue Circle Nayanjyoti Pathak to the affected areas and for his assurance to the villagers.

Meanwhile, Officer in-charge of Mangaldai Police Station, Inspector Mukut Kakati, with the active cooperation of the volunteers of Village Defence Party (VDP), has taken an initiative to repair the breached portion of the Bhupen Hazarika Road connecting Mangaldai with Chereng village and engaged tractors and excavators. He also undertaken plantation programme along the roadside.

On Tuesday, he, accompanied by deputy adviser of VDP, Mukut Saikia, Circle Organizer Kushal Medhi, president of Mangaldai Thana Committee of VDP, Nayan Das planted saplings with protection in the area to prevent erosion in future.
