DIBRUGARH: Assam is vulnerable to climate change due to its location in the Eastern Himalayan periphery having high rainfall with annual floods whose severity has risen due to adverse climatic conditions.
The water levels in the river rises by about 10 metres during most flood seasons, often submerging large parts of river islands, riverbanks, ghats (shore landing stations for boats, ferries and other forms of water transport), and river transport infrastructure, causing considerable disruption in transport services. The development of waterways has thus been challenging; the long flood season from June to September and the subsequent dry period reduces and alters the river flows and navigation channels considerably.
In order to prevent disaster in inland water transport, SEWA and RMSI LTD, under the World Bank study project on 'Risk Management and Resilient infrastructure development for Assam IWT', on March 31 a joint disaster preparedness training was conducted in collaboration with Alok Sandhani Kamjan Alengi Salmora Library and IMPACT-NE at Majuli. SDRF Majuli conducted the training.
The community capacity strengthening training covered key preparedness skills, including demonstrating various rescue and response techniques utilized to save lives during flood-like situations including the rescue of drowned persons due to boat capsize and resuscitation of victims.
