GORESWAR: Amid the ongoing High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) and Higher Secondary Final Examinations in the state, an unprecedented incident has occurred in Tamulpur on February 14. A video has gone viral on social media showing students of the technical stream at Tamulpur Higher Secondary School copying answers from their mobile phones during the Higher Secondary Final Examination. The incident took place in one of the leading educational institutions in Tamulpur district headquarters.

Notably, the video clearly captures students openly using mobile phones to write their exam in the presence of the invigilator. Moreover, the invigilator himself is heard making remarks to the students, such as “Leave out one or two answers,” “Otherwise, you’ll get caught,” and “Don’t write everything”—statements that are now widely circulated online. The shocking video has sparked strong reactions across Tamulpur district.

The incident raises serious concerns about how students managed to bring mobile phones into the exam hall despite strict government guidelines prohibiting such devices in examination centres. Many have questioned the overall vigilance and administration of the examination process.

Several student organizations, including the Tamulpur District Students’ Union, the Tamulpur District Committees of  All Bodo Students’ Union,  All Rabha Students’ Union and the Assam Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad, have strongly condemned the incident. They have demanded a thorough investigation and strict action against those responsible.

Anup Kalita, president of the Tamulpur District Students’ Union, and its Secretary, Nayanjyoti Kalita, have urged authorities to take stringent action against the exam centre’s in-charge and the invigilator.

Meanwhile, Dulujit Das, an executive member of the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU), has blamed the exam centre’s superintendent for the incident. He has demanded immediate action against the superintendent and exam controller while calling for strict monitoring to ensure transparency in upcoming exams in all examination centres across Tamulpur district.

Following the controversy, the district administration issued an official notice, instructing the school’s Principal, Bibhuti Deka, to submit a detailed report on the incident. Additionally, he has been relieved from his supervisory duties at the examination centre with immediate effect. Ilima Kandulan, Circle Officer and Executive Magistrate of Tamulpur Revenue Circle, has been appointed as the new supervisor of the examination centre with immediate effect.

After taking charge, Ilima Kandulan reviewed the viral video footage and took strict action. As a result, three students, identified by their roll numbers (Roll-0809 No-40007, No-40008, No-40005), have been expelled for using mobile phones during the exam on February 14. Additionally, the invigilator present in the exam hall has been suspended from duty.
