TEZPUR: The District Road Safety Committee (DRSC) meeting was convened to review the status of actions taken on directives issued during the previous session at the conference hall of the District Commissioner’s Office, Sonitpur. The meeting was presided by Additional District Commissioner Twahir Alam and attended by Chairperson of Tezpur Municipal Board Ramen Tamuli, Additional Superintendent of Police (HQ) Madhurima Das, DRSC Member Secretary Ajit Kumar Medhi, and other members of the committee.
At the outset, the status of actions taken in accordance with the directives issued during the previous DRSC meeting was reviewed. The committee held detailed discussions on several key road safety issues, including the need for effective speed-limiting measures, removal of footpath encroachments, regulation of e-rickshaw licenses and designated routes, and the persistent issue of parking congestion within the town area. The Inspector of Schools informed the committee that registration of ‘Chota Cop’ volunteers and awareness meetings in educational institutions were underway as directed.
The District Transport Officer (DTO) reported that strict monitoring of helmet usage is ongoing and that offenders are being counselled accordingly. The concerned department was instructed to ensure immediate maintenance of the approach roads to the Mission Chariali Flyover and to carry out necessary repairs to potholes without delay. Additional SP Madhurima Das shared road safety statistics from the iRAD (Integrated Road Accident Database) platform, reporting a total of 24 road accidents recorded in the district for the month of July, including two fatal incidents. The committee also discussed the onboarding of all hospitals in the district onto the iRAD platform to ensure real-time data reporting and better coordination during emergencies.
A new initiative, Rah-Veer Yojana, launched by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), was also discussed during the meeting. The scheme aims to recognize and reward Good Samaritans who voluntarily assist accident victims during the critical golden hour by facilitating their timely transportation to hospitals. Financial incentives will be provided under this scheme to encourage greater public participation in emergency response.
